Traditional media vs. Social Media

Many audience out there are changing their habits and want to get more inform of what is happening in the world. Traditional media was when professional people, went out there searching to tell a story, or important events on local TV stations, and the radio.  People used to have few resources on what was going on around the world. Nowadays audience are accessing information in multiple formats on multiple platforms on multiple devices. Social media is getting bigger and larger in the way that anyone can post their stories, either on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Audience believe that the Internet is more important and more accurate source of information than television, radio and newspapers.

Due to the change of our lifestyles, I don’t believe that we should be against the new technology that provides us with more information from multiple channels. Individuals post their own views on topics on their personal blog they create and allow others to respond with their point of view. Although, traditional media organizations are inviting their audience to respond to stories, and discuss the news, the new social media is also sharing some lead stories from the traditional media.

My point of view, is that nowadays with the technology that we have, it is good to use it. Everyone has a smartphone and can capture something that is happening at that moment. Major TV channels like CNN, CBS, have also taken advantage of YouTube and Facebook. All these traditional media outlets have even made their own channels on YouTube where they can share and post videos and allow audience to comment and give their feedback.

I agree that traditional media shared more serious kind of stories and news on air for the audience.  They had their focus on something specific and forgot to share basic situations that happened on a daily basis. With the help of these new devices, sites, media sources such as Facebook, YouTube etc. it help people to share something that others did not take into account, and audience get more inform on a variety of topics each day. Political news, violence, are not the only news that concern the people. There are a lot of topics that each of us are interested in and want to read in depth and learn more about it. In that in mind, I believe that social media increased the quality of news and information, and made individuals able to raise their voice, and share their own stories.

Social Media: The biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution!

Individuals use social media as an outlet to express their thoughts and opinions so many people can “hear” them without face to face communication. Thinking of social media brings to mind Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Wikipedia, but in fact those are just the tools. Socializing can happen in different ways, such as texting, music, videos and photos. One of Social media’s characteristic is participation. For example, when you post a status on Facebook you wait for someone to comment and give you feedback, and the same happens with Twitter as well. Additionally, conversation is another characteristic of social media that can begin with a simple comment or like and evolve into a conversation between individuals due to common interests or opinions about a certain topic. Social media assist in spreading the news faster as well as keeping individuals informed on new topics. As soon as something bad happens, the news go viral via social media such us YouTube and Facebook.

Overall social media has changed the way people interact with one another and how they express their own ideas and thoughts and make it public so everyone can participate. After looking further into social media we can conclude that it is not a fad but a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. After the Industrial revolution social media changed the means in which companies communicate with consumers. Nowadays businesses focus on finding new ways to attract customers and change the way of communication to match the ones of modern society. There are different tools such as promotions to advertise a product and most of the time companies create a page on Facebook so people can join and get all the latest deals.

To conclude, social media have a huge impact on an individual’s lifestyle and it will continue to do so as technology grows and new social tools are available.
